I will tackle problems faced by young people in the 21st century. Youths do have problems that are uniquely their own. One of the unfortunate challenges they face is survival in an increasingly competitive academic world. In the past, it was enough to merely have an education up to secondary or college level. Today, nothing short of a university degree will do. And it would have to be a good degree too! As a result, young people face endless pressure in having to constantly perform above the par or face the being relegated to the rubbish heap of failures. The society they live in has little tolerance for failures.
Youth go through some emotional adjustments as they learn to cope in the world. They need to modify expectations, cope with rejection as they get involved in the relationships as well as understand the attendant changes in their bodies. These are terrible times when youths try to deal with such problems, of which no adults can seem to understand. The latter, having gone through them, certainly feel little need to cajole or mollycoddle them. This ultimately causes the young people to feel alone and frustrated in their troubles.

ya.. i agree with what you say.. the word is getting more and conpetitive day by day.. we need to constantly inprove ourself in order not to be let behind.. people in the pass are less fortunate in term of finances but they sure have lesser worries than people now..
wei hao
i agree that in this competitive and changing world,in order to survive, we need to constantly improve and update ourself with the latest technology and information but it does not mean that young people had more to worry because both youths and adults had to face the changing world.
i do not agree with the topic. times are changing, as well as, the people, attitude, lifestyle and mindsets. but one thing among people hasnt changed. their ability to adapt to changes in their lives or environment. youths in our generation are exposed to the many harsh realities in life, its hard to even say if they still behave like children of their age. the problems youths and adults face is infinate and ever-changing, everyday. it cannot be measured merely through words.
I dun agree. We young ppl only have to cope with the competition of acadimic studies, if we can't, we just get bad results and embarassment. On the other hand, if adults can't cope with their work- they get fired. And if the adult were to be fired, he won't have the money to take care of us young, dependent, adults.
So u see, adults have to worry young ppl problems too.
I feel that all comments are true. but if u guys think deeper. if the adults now have so many things to worry about. Dont you feel that we would have to start worry for ourselves starting from a younger age as life will be harder in the future?
y worry now about the worries of the future? No wonder young ppl nowadays worry so much, they worry so much about the future, but not the present. While the adults worry the present and the future.
yes, i agree with what you say. Not only its more difficult to obtain a degree but its getting more expensive.youth need to get used to facing rejections as rejections are part and parcel of life
I disagree with jing wei. I feel that we will worry to a certain extent. It is thru worry, that we drive ourselves. Like we worry we will not get a job, that's why we have to study harder.
It is thru this worry that u might not be able to reach your dreams, that u get the motivation to work harder, and try to achieve it. And the end result will be beautiful when you reach it if you try hard enough.
"Young people today have more to worry than adults". I'll say equal. Young people concentrate on studies while being pressurized by parents, while adults concentrate on earning money and pressuring their kids.
That why youth today have to worry more. If we continued to act so naive and not knowing what is coming for us, we would definitely be unable to cope with challenges ahead of us. Whereas in the past. adult will worry everything for us. That why life is harder. We have to equip ourselves.
ya, i agree to what muneer had said. Everything is getting more expansive like our school fees. i'm glad that we young people don need to worry about it but for our parents they will need to work harder in order to give us a better life and future.
therefore, i think the adults will have more to worry than young people.
generally its going to be the adults that worry the most. But of cos the amount of worry each ppl faces differ. We young ppl now just have to worry about completing this CRS stuff and a few other hw. How many of us now are also worrying about their future right now? Im rdy to bet many wants to finish this hw quickly to play their games! If we dun do this, its just low marks for CRS. While fer adults, if they dun do thy 'hw', they get the sack. its do or die.
i disgree what jing wei say.
if everybody don worry, wont we all be slacking?
if everybody don worry, we would still be living like the 18th century
i kinda agree with wat pei wen say.. its true that every1 have worries... every1 have their own worries.. our parents have to worry for us, worry for money to support the family etc.. and we student have to worry abt out studies( although we seems to be slacking =D ).
YES, I have read every single comment, and I agree whole-heartedly. Now, I am going to give my own view(s).
In order to completely elaborate on the topic “Young People Today Have More To Worry Then Adults, Do You Agree?” I sincerely think that we must link the question back to the classic “MONEY” topic. And I promise to be brief.
Although there is an old saying that money isn’t everything, but we shall not deny the fact that almost everything costs money. And the classic example that made the pocket of many parents to burn is, EDUCATION. In every occasion, education means stress (of course, for both parents and kids); this is true at all times and in all countries.
So?
It is not uncommon to hear children talking about how eager they are to grow up to be adults. Yet, as I approach this adulthood, I shudder to think of what I will encounter. This is especially so in the area of responsibilities.
Many young people go through adolescence thinking that no one on this Earth has more problems than them. As a student now, I need to ensure that I am making the most of my education so as to have a good basis for my career in the future. Other responsibilities include being a good child to my parents and living up to the expectations of the people important in my life.
However, I am not trying to imply that adults don’t have their own worries. The kind of worries they faced may be of a different type to ours (eg. working life), but the stress experienced is certainly not less. Adults work in the knowledge that they need to make a living, not just for themselves, but for their existing and future families as well. Their areas of responsibilities are enlarged to include the lives of others dear to them.
Thus, I feel that it is unfair to say that the young person or the adults has more problems. Even as I am typing now, the world is changing; what we are good at now maybe outdated by the time we go for work. And what we are worrying now might have a solution to it in, let’s say, tomorrow? There are unlimited probabilities to the mysterious future, we sometimes don’t even know what we are thinking about; and the root of many unnecessary stress is often inter-linked with “thinking too much”.
andy
Three in a row~~
There are several factors we shall put into consideration before we make our conclusion on who have more worries. They are:
-For teenager, what country are they from? Developed or developing?
-What kind of problems do they normally encountered?
-Do their parents accompany them as often as their friends?
-Do they have any physical disability?
-Characteristic; optimistic? Depressed?
- For adults, what is their purpose of working?
-Do they engage in a work of their interest?
My conclusion is, the president has the most to worry about compare to us. And president or government is usually an adult. In general, MOST (I emphasis on MOST) adult has more 2 worry then a teenager. This applies to normal circumstances.
OK~~ SAY SAY SAY
andy
What andy said make sences. Before we conclude weather the adult or the teenage has more to worry we have to look at the envirnment. For the case in Singapore, i think that the adult have more to worry than the teenage.
i think we young people do worry about our future but sometime we will forget about it and become very slack.
as for our parents they will keep remind us to do homework, work hard for our future and ect
thus i think parents worry more than we young people.
i dun really agree that young ppl have more to worry then adults. u hav got to see it this way. with the changing world both the young and the old hav things to worry about.its true that the young need to worry about their studies more now than in the past but the parents also have to worry about giving their child the best education.in the past hte parents dun really worry about thier chiild studies
actually u have to see the type of people also. certain ppl are happy go lucky, they dun really care about anything.
i don't very agree about what hermann said.. that people are happy go lucky and they don't really care about anything. ya is true that we have to worry about our own studies... but have ever thought about like u need to buy something and your parent didn't give u money to buy?? that is quite a very "SERIOUS" problem to us am i right?? since we don't work. meaning full time jobs.
i agree with what david say.
young people need to study and study. there wont be enough time to get a job. therefore the young people do not have money. some of their friends may wear branded items. thus, they feel that they have to buy the branded shirt so as to ''click'' with their friends.therefore, young people today have to worry more then adults
i agreed with what xavier said..
at our age, we do not fully understand how our elders' life with the pressure they had to face.
but at the same time, they will not be able to know what actually are the situation and life we youngsters are facing..
and for us students and our age.. we do have things to worry.. ok let's say for polytechnic life.. ok like our course.. quite a number ok students taking our course deee.. we have 2nd year concentration selection not only we have to think about what we are interested in.. we have to think further back.. like will the selection we have made able to go into our desired university and continue our next journey from there?? if your selection is not able to get into the uni that u want... won't that be a big headache??
on my own point of view about the question.. why young people like us have to worry so much.. gets what needed to be done. be your best in everything you do, thats enough.. cert is just a thing that grants you a position in a work place but not your future. to me, as long you are hardworking, the experience and just a little creativity, will bring you far..
but not all the company in singapore accept that u said u are experience and they will employ you... singapore is a typical country.. most of the jobs required diploma ar.. certificates that are related to that jobs.. that is the sort of experience they are looking for.. typical country with typical employers..
To me i think both SINGAPOREAN teenagers and adults have to worry more than any other southeast asia countries.Firstly we all know that Singapore has a higher standard of living. This means that level of education is high in singapore so the poor teenagers hav to worry abt their education or else they will find difficulty living in spore in the future. As wat u all said that in order to get a gd job in spore we must AT LEAST hav a diploma. Nt to be suprised when time goes by diploma will no longer be recognised and the minimun requirement must be at least a degree.
As for adult, the main worry is whether they can support their families livin in spore.Becos without a cent i don think the family can survive here.So adults need to struggle to find sufficient money for their family.
i agree with fikri. Singaporean Youth are facing more worries than people in other countries. But i feel that this is a good sign, as if everyone would to heck care and stuff. Maybe the world wont be such a good place to live in.
Very good points Andy, Muneer, Pei Wen, David & Hermann. Like how you dissected the analyses Andy - in depth, relevant and well said!
Keep up the good work everyone!
After reading the comments, i feel that the minority of the young people, who are studying and working at the same time have more to worry than adults because they work in order to survive in the society and not for leisure or upgrading their standard of living.
yes not all company will accept you without a cert.. but there is still a few will accept. as giving a good working attitude, i cant see why it cant go a level higher.. what is most important now for young people is to study while they still can and of course study hard.
I disagree that young people have more to worry then adults because they do not need to worry about aging unlike adults. Due to aging, adults will lose their job and because of no qualification, it is hard for them to look for job. Instead youth who have more vitality as compare to adults would be more wanted in the market
I do agree with wat sean said. as long as 1 is hardworking, the cert is quite useless. regarding wat david had said, u need not start with a gd job. as long as u are hardworking, the bosses will go around recommending u a better post so u dun hav to worry about needing a diploma to get a job
If someone is hardworking in the first place, he would already have gotten his diploma and have a cert to start with. Certificates and a hardworking character would see someone far. However, luck plays a part in everything. Imagine a boss who can't recognize talent even if you are the most hardworking and has the best certs.
well, not only does luck plays a role in people lives, so does his ability to do things. a hardworking person who is not able to apply anything is as good as nothing.
i still feel that, there are too many things to take to mind to this topic. coming to a conclusion isnt really possible. with the different lifestyles people have in the many different parts of the world and the different things people experience each minute of their lives, its too hard.
Pei Wen, not true that as long one is hardworking, a diploma is assured. i have seeen people who are hardworking but jus cant pass the subject they are weak in.
i dun agree woth david, firstly there are happy go lucky ppl in the world. exaple, beggars. i am sure all parents are understanding, if u need to buy something that is a need, i am sure ur parents will giv u the money to buy it. if it is a want, they may not giv it.
from my point of view both adults have as much things to worry about than youngsters.this is because the adults have more responsibilities than youngsters.
i don't agree with the topic..lets say our parents, they've to worry not only for themselves but mainly is for their children future.
youngsters nowadays have to work harder and study harder than when the adults were youngsters. this is because as time goes by, more information and questions are answers. thus children are stress out and worry if they going to pass their test or where they going to go after this. an example is PSLE. presently PSLE students are taking up subjects that are known to be taught in secondary schools.
due to this to adults also worry for their childs future and make the child attend tuition and so on. thus causing both adult and youngsters to have worries. to add on to the adults worries they have other responsibilities and also the worry of getting retrenched. thus, the youngters worries will also somewhat become the adults worry ,which give the adults more to worry.
that's why most young people today only worry mostly about their own future..parents,however,worry about their chilren since they're born, to provided them with a better environment,e.g money matters..
Parents have to fight for spaces to enter primary schools for them..
Xavier is correct.
There is no correct answer on this topic. Everyone have different problems. Some young people may have more worries than adults, some not.
I agree with peiwen sayin that if u are hardworkin u can get ur diploma. Becos people who ar hardworkin will not give up easily even though they fail for any module, they will try n try till they pass.
ok abilty to do things are also important.Everyone has its special ability to do certain things.Bt the person also need to be hardworkin in order to make full use of their abilities.
Ya actually it depends on every individual. Everyone hav diferent type of lifestyle and the way they tink is also differnt.
however, sometimes its very hard to judge who has more worry than the other..it has to depend how each country is progressing and what attitude they have in facing certain things.
i agree with xavier. different countries have different customs, thus may be different on the view on weather young people have more worries than adults. however in developed adults may have more worries than youngster. however in developing countries, it depends as either the younng, adult or both have more worries
I agree with peiwen sayin that if u are hardworkin u can get ur diploma but if would mature at a later time, they will end up joining the bad company such as gangster thus their future may be gone!!!!
